The MLS will restart in 2021 for its 26th season. Austin FC will join the league, taking the total number of teams to 27.
Major League Soccer started out in 1996, with just ten teams. It has grown to a total of 27 teams for the 2021 season, and with an average attendance of over 20,000 per game, it is the third-highest attended pro sports league in the USA.
The league has expanded at such a rapid rate, with Real Salt Lake's addition to the league in 2005 starting a domino effect of sixteen new teams joining over the next sixteen years. There are plans for teams in Charlotte, Sacramento, and St. Louis to also join the league.
Many high-profile foreign players have played in the MLS over the years, from Thierry Henry to Kaka, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, David Villa, Wayne Rooney, and of course, David Beckham.
Beckham took the MLS Cup title in 2011 and 2012 with Los Angeles Galaxy - the team's third and fourth titles.
